Islam, the religion of the Muslims, is India's second largest religion. India has the second largest Muslim populations in the world after Indonesia. Most Indian Muslims live in the northern part of the country. Some are descendants of Islamic peoples from western and central Asia. But most are descendants of Hindus (estimated at around 85%) who converted to Islam. Some continue many Hindu practices. Others follow the same practices as Muslims in Middle Eastern countries. The Muslims have been a powerful political and economic group in India for centuries. Muslims, the followers of Islam, are India's largest religious minority, accounting for nearly 14% of India's population. The founder of Islam, Prophet Mohammed, was born in 570 AD in Mecca, now in Saudi Arabia. He had his first revelation from Allah, in 610 AD. This and later visions led to the compilation of the Holy book- Koran. Mohammed preached against idol worship. Muslims are strictly monotheistic and consider seeking God through idols a sin. They believe that there is only one God, Allah, and Mohammed is His prophet. Fridays are observed as the Muslim holy day. The Jama Masjid in Delhi is the largest mosque in India. The aim of every Muslim is to make a pilgrimage to Mecca and become a Haji. The teachings of Islam closely correspond with the Old Testament of the Bible and Moses and Jesus are both accepted by the Muslims, although they do not consider Jesus the son of God.
