Nuclear Power in India

Power and Energy

World's energy consumption of primary energy includes petroleum, natural gas, coal, hydro-electric, nuclear, geo-thermal, solar, wind electric power and biomass. Petroleum remains the world's most heavily used source of energy. Rural electrification in India was up from 43.5% in 1991 to 86.2% in 2002, according to Census of India. As of Aug 2008, India is facing a power deficit of 14% during peak hours (average is 9%).

* Includes reactors under construction

As per a report dated 16 July 2006, the 103 active nuclear reactors in the United States supply about 20 percent of US’ electricity. In France, for instance, 78 percent of the electricity comes from nuclear energy. There are currently 337 working reactors in 30 countries outside the United States, and there may soon be many more, as India and China embark upon ambitious plans to build dozens over the next decade to satisfy their thirst for electricity.
