India`s Lakshadweep islands offer visitors resorts and white sand beaches about 200
nautical miles off the country`s southwest coast. Pristine Bangaram island`s lack of
indigenous residents and strict limits on visitors has kept its palm trees and beaches
unspoiled. |

Nice horns
Kaziranga National Park, a rhino preserve, was named after Kazir, a mythical tribal
princess said to be the Doctor Doolittle of her era. The park was a royal hunting ground
from the 14th to the 19th century and was made a reserve by the British to protect the
nearly extinct Indian rhino in 1908. |

On Lake Dal in the Srinagar region of Kashmir, locals and visitors rent houseboats for a
cool and quiet mountain break. |

Presidential pomp
Rashtrapati Bhawan, India`s official presidential residence, was designed by Lutyens as
the home of the British Viceroys of India. Built on 330 acres in 1929, the building
overlooks a Mughal-style garden with 37 fountains. |

Far pavilions
Calcutta`s Victoria Memorial was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales in 1921 in memory of
Queen Victoria, its architecture is based on the Taj Mahal. The elaborate marble memorial
now holds paintings, clothing and artifacts from the time of the Raj. |

Little Buddha?
Known as "little Lhasa," North India`s Dharamashala is the home of the Dalai
Lama and the exiled Tibetan government that fled Chinese occupation of Tibet. The region`s
mountain scenery mixes with monasteries, monks and prayer flags to create a Buddhist
sanctuary in the outer Himalayas. |

High up in a plateau between the Himalayas and the Karakoram, the Hemis Festival is
celebrated by locals and tourists. Residents of Ladakh are mainly Buddhists of Tibetan
ancestry. Buddhism was imported to Tibet via Ladakh. |

GOP Convention East?
Rajasthan`s Holi Festival is one of the biggest Hindu festivals in India. Holi is an
ancient game residents play with pichkaris
(brass water squirters), gulal (bright powders)
and abeer (confetti made from mica). The
objective? To drench other players with as much color as possible. |

known for its museums and palaces as much as its beaches and coconuts. |
