For the needy children in
private schools and colleges, we have paid part of the school fees directly
to the educational institute. This education fund is not limited to any
community. The selection criteria
is the last mark sheet, signifying his/ her results and position in the
class AND a recommendation letter from the school principal or class
teacher.
Our
other education related activities include:
-
Helping over 250 needy
but deserving children with their education needs mostly in the
Sion-Matunga (Central Mumbai) area.
-
Started for the first
time in Mumbai a “Best Attendance Trophy” for BMC schools in each of the
24 wards of Mumbai. This is to encourage teachers to take active interest
in reducing the drop out rates in BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation)
schools.
-
Helping NGO 'Sunday
Friends' in running "education centers" for about 300 slum children.
-
Distributed 1000
dozen notebooks in Sion-King's Circle area at highly subsidized rates.
Civic
activities include:
- Won a Public Interest
Litigation (PIL) filed in Mumbai High Court, against the unjust towing
practices of the Mumbai Traffic Police. The court ruled that cars in
Mumbai cannot be towed by operators who have not been selected through a
tendering process and also contracts need to be signed. The traffic police
will also be responsible for damage caused to cars while being towed and
there needs to be a written authorization before any private vehicle can
be opened.
- Publishing a
newsletter "Die Hard Indian" since February 2000. Since June 2005,
publishing an electronic newsletter for local Sion-Matunga-Dadar-Wadala
residents. Visited by over 1,50,000 visitors every year.
- In co-ordination with
BMC for road tarring at Flank Road, Sion AND traffic signal near Sion
Hospital.
