Something to think about - November 2005
Towing Menace II -
By Gaurang Damani
Twenty four Sion-Matunga
organizations got together on 27th November 2005 and filed a "memorandum of demands" in
support of the PIL filed on 14/10/2005 in Mumbai High court by
Gaurang Damani.
The demands to the traffic
police are as follows:
-
Clear paint
marking on the road signifying ‘no parking’
-
Road
sign-posts signifying beginning and end of ‘no parking’ zone
-
Higher
priority to be given to towing of cars from roads where there is heavy
moving traffic for eg.
Dr B. Ambedkar Rd or L. Nappoo Rd etc. Lower priority to
towing from by-lanes where there is low traffic for eg. Sion Jain society
or Matunga behind Aurora theater etc.
-
Un-authorized
structures and hawkers/ abandoned vehicles and jaywalkers obstruct flow of
smooth traffic. Traffic police must take action to ensure smooth flow of
traffic.
-
Trench digging
and other utility services create (authorized and un-authorized) debris,
which hinders smooth flow of traffic and needs to be cleared within 24
hours of completion of the job.
-
To avoid
instances of damage to the car bumpers etc. due to towing, a clamp must be
used to at the place of parking itself.
-
Request to
traffic constables to be courteous to fellow citizens.
-
Traffic police
must pay towing contractors by cheque.
The "memorandum of demands" was submitted to
Matunga Traffic chowky and Worli traffic headdquarters.
